Jake Barnes: From Academy Graduate to Manchester Futsal Club Star

Ahead of the UEFA Futsal Champions League, we caught up with Jake Barnes

Jake Barnes, a standout player for Manchester Futsal Club, has been on an incredible journey from the club's youth academy to becoming a key player in the first team. His commitment to futsal and his impressive energy on the court make him one of the most highly-rated young players in the sport.

Early Beginnings in Stalybridge

Growing up in Stalybridge, Jake was immersed in football from a young age, playing at various academies since he was four. His introduction to futsal came at 15, thanks to a chance encounter during a 5-a-side game. "I was playing with my mate's family when Russell Fryer suggested I try futsal. From there, I attended my first session with Sam as my coach," Jake recalls.

The Allure of Futsal

Starting futsal at 15, Jake was captivated by the sport's dynamic nature. "Seeing clips of players doing crazy skills drew me in. Being on the ball more than in football was a massive plus for me," he explains. Some of his fondest memories include mini-bus trips with the development team. "We had trips to Sunderland and Newcastle, blasting music at 7 am and having a laugh on the bus. It was brilliant."

Influences and Team Dynamics

Sam, his first coach, remains Jake's biggest inspiration. "Winning the grand final with him felt special. He has helped me a lot," he says. Playing for Manchester Futsal Club feels like home for Jake. "The club's ambitions match my own, which helps breed success both personally and as a team."

Playing Style and Mentality

Jake plays as a fix/winger, known for his aggression and energy. "You can expect aggression and energy from me when pressing in the front line. I love making off-the-ball runs for my teammates to find me with passes." He emphasises dedication and commitment as keys to success in futsal. "It's important for all players, from goalkeepers to outfielders, to be good on the ball and make quick decisions."

Motivation and Aspirations

Failure has been a significant motivator for Jake. "Striving to avoid the feeling of losing big games drives me to succeed. My goals are to qualify for the main round of the Champions League, make my debut for England, and cement Manchester as the best team in the country for years to come."

Hosting the UEFA Futsal Champions League in Manchester is a historic moment. "It's amazing to make history in front of our fans and the people who have supported us," he says. Jake is looking forward to playing against high-level opposition. "I'm excited to be pushed to be the best we can be."

Preparation and Community Impact

Since the final, Jake has been training rigorously. "I haven't stopped training. Along with England camps, I've been in the gym five times a week and doing futsal sharp sessions." He believes futsal can positively impact young people by providing opportunities to create social bonds and develop as players. His advice to young players is to be patient and fully commit to improving.

Life Beyond Futsal

Outside of futsal, Jake works as a duty manager at Ordsall Leisure Centre, helping to grow futsal in Salford. He also enjoys playing snooker and attending house music festivals and events with friends.

A fun fact about Jake? "I won multiple club championships playing golf when I was younger, and my name is still on the boards at the Dukinfield clubhouse."

Jake Barnes' journey from the Manchester Futsal Club Academy to the first team is a testament to his dedication and passion for the sport. As he looks forward to playing in the UEFA Futsal Champions League, his story inspires young athletes to pursue their futsal dreams.
