Jeffrey Adubofour: From Hackney Streets to the UEFA Futsal Champions League Stage

Ahead of the UEFA Futsal Champions League, we caught up with Jeffrey Adubofour

Personal Background

Jeffrey Adubofour’s journey into futsal began far from where it might end—with a shot at the UEFA Futsal Champions League. Born and raised in Hackney, East London, Jeffrey's roots are deeply embedded in his Ghanaian heritage. Growing up in a diverse and vibrant community, he was surrounded by sports, but it wasn't until he attended the University of Leicester that he discovered futsal. “A close friend of mine was already in the team and thought I would enjoy the game, so he encouraged me to get involved,” Jeffrey recalls. That encouragement led him to start playing futsal at 18, and he’s been hooked ever since.

Futsal Journey

Starting at 18 might be late by some standards, but Jeffrey took to futsal immediately, captivated by the sport's unique blend of speed, technical skill, and tactical intelligence. “What attracted me to futsal was the speed of the game along with the technical and tactical demands,” he says. These demands played to his strengths and pushed him to develop new ones, culminating in one of his proudest early achievements—winning the BUCS Tier 1 National Cup back-to-back. “It was a great team; felt like I was playing futsal with all my friends. We had great team chemistry on and off the court,” Jeffrey reflects.

He credits his development in the sport to the many coaches who have guided him along the way. “The biggest influence on me are all the coaches I’ve worked under in my time playing the game. I’ve learned so much and want to continue to do so,” Jeffrey says, underscoring his commitment to continuous improvement.

Playing Experience

For Jeffrey, futsal offers something distinct from other sports. “It is a fast-paced game with high technical and tactical demands,” he notes, explaining what keeps him coming back to the court. This passion only grew when he moved to Manchester in 2020. “Moving up north was very different. It was a new environment, people, and club. The boys were very welcoming when I joined; Manchester Futsal Club is a family club, and I have made some lifelong friends,” Jeffrey shares. The sense of community and belonging has made this chapter of his life particularly memorable.

On the court, Jeffrey mainly operates as a winger, but his versatility is a key asset. “I’ve been working in the last few years to be a versatile player that can operate as a fix or reference point depending on what the team requires,” he explains. This adaptability is just one of the many skills he believes are crucial for success in futsal, along with quick decision-making.

Personal Insights

Jeffrey’s pre-game routine is all about relaxation and focus. “No pre-game rituals, just try to listen to some music, relax, and focus on the game,” he says, emphasising the importance of staying calm before the storm. His motivation is driven by a “constant desire to improve and win,” a mindset that has clearly served him well.

When it comes to long-term goals, Jeffrey’s ambitions are clear: “I want to represent the national team while continually competing in the Champions League, aiming to get through to the main rounds.” These aspirations are well within reach, particularly given his current trajectory with Manchester Futsal Club.

Hosting the UEFA Futsal Champions League

Being part of the first English club to host the UEFA Futsal Champions League is a milestone Jeffrey doesn’t take lightly. “Very proud—no club in England has managed to do it, so it’s a special moment. We are determined to put on a show on and off the court,” he states, echoing the collective ambition of the club.

The opportunity to face off against top players and clubs across Europe is what Jeffrey is most looking forward to. “The challenge of playing against top players and clubs is exciting,” he says. His preparation for this monumental event has been rigorous, involving hard training and friendly matches to ensure the team is in peak condition.

Community and Impact

Jeffrey also sees futsal as a powerful tool for engaging young athletes, particularly in his community. “The speed of the game and how involved it is allows for freedom of expression within young athletes' games,” he says. His advice to newcomers? “Get involved—you will never look back.”

Personal Life and Interests

Off the court, Jeffrey stays active with gym sessions and runs, and when time allows, he visits friends and family. “Futsal is my hobby and passion,” he states simply, underscoring his deep connection to the sport. And while many might not know it, Jeffrey has an older brother who once played professional football, adding another layer to his rich sporting heritage.

Fun Fact

A fun fact that fans might not know about Jeffrey? “I have an older brother that is an ex-professional footballer,” he reveals, a nod to the athleticism that runs in his family.

Jeffrey Adubofour's journey from the streets of Hackney to the courts of the UEFA Futsal Champions League is a testament to his dedication, skill, and love for the game. As he continues to make his mark on the sport, there’s no doubt that his story will inspire many more to follow in his footsteps.
